The Laptop Hunt begins

Folks,

It has been no blogging since a few weeks, and i guess i have a valid excuse for the same. With new responsibilities dropped everyday over my shoulders, i have tried hard to breath out of my office by 7:00 PM. Though my boss ensures most of the times that my intentions are not fulfilled, i have mananged to sneak out of the workplace few times, in search of a notebook.

I initially thought that my office desktop was enough to take me through the entire process of preping and apping for b-schools. But after slogging for 8-9 hours a day, you just cant sit on that same chair and think of writing a line or two of your essays!!

After almost two weeks of online and offline research, i was able to zero-on to three models.
  • Dell XPS M1210: 12 inch wide screen, 1GB RAM, 60 GB HD (Rs 65,000)
  • Lenonvo 3000 N 100: 14 inch wide screen, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HD (Rs 60,000)
  • HP Pavilion 1615: 14 inch wide screen, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HD (Rs 55,000)

While 12 inch smart screen, sylish looks and 1 GB RAM are pulling me towards Dell, the price factor makes HP very attractive. Most of the remaining features are common for all the above configurations.

Any suggestions please!!!

Just buy the Apple MACBook and load XP on it for dual boot. (I use a Acer 82-4WLMi which is a powerful Core Duo, 2 Gig RAM, 120 GB HDD, but I'd rather have a dual boot mac ;) )

do u think a 12 or 14 inch screen will be enough??? dont u think that's a bit too small???

i've been hunting for one too - saw some 15.4" ones from Dell, Lenovo and HP. I think i will go with the HP 5000 series. But am planning to get it thru a friend from US. It is not so urgent coz i have a fully loaded PC at home :)

Fix the usage tenure and primary need of your laptop. IBM's ( lenevo) have better resale. Also look at how much they weigh.

I've used a HP and own a IBM(R51) ( back when i bought it was still called IBM and not lenevo). I'd always prefer something that lasts than something that just looks handsome. The IBM hasn't crashed in 1.5 years now wherereas my Office HP did.

My opinion of HP is that of a handsome thingy. Lenevo would be good though it wont give you the sound and picture quality of HP

If you are not looking at a laptop as your major source of entertainment ( movies, masti, music player) go for Lenevo else HP.

BTW 14 inch is cool enough. (I prefer smaller things though)

@scarecrow: Core2Duo & Core2Extreme are certainly very tempting... But the dealers here dont see them in the Indian Markets for a 1-2 months the least... :(

@iday: I would prefer a 12 inch over a bigger one yaar.. One of my ex-roomies used a 15.4 wide screen Dell and seriously carrying it at places wasnt fun for him...

@inblue: The primary usage will be high speed surfing, as i am a die-hard surfer and some entertainment options added to it would not cause harm... And so, 1 Gig RAM.. Havent still thought about the time period though.. :(

Reg time period - shudnt u be looking at atleast 3 yrs from now??? do u wanna change ur laptop half way thru ur MBA?!?!?

Reg size - my friend has a 15.4" as well. It weighs close to 3KGs. I thought it was fine. Now u guys are making me rethink. Will check out the 14" ones also.

14 inch is fine. Go for the 14. they are managable. If surfing is your aim. I think either of them will be useful. I havent inquired off late but have this feeling that dells are a bit costly.

Ye.. 3 years should be the minimum mate... And thats the reason why one needs loads of research... Its a long time investment... 'Fixed asset'.. :) Dells & Lenovos are costly, but are known for their resale values aswell... Why it has to be a trade-off everywhere you go??? O this world!!!! :)

As far as re-sale value is concerned, i dont really care.
In 3 years time, i am not gonna gain much of the Lappie i'm gonna purchase now. The rate at which technology's growing, any laptop will be old material and be loked at the way we look at P3's now :) So dont bother.

And what's the big gain if i'm gonna shed out 100s of $$ now, to get back a 50$ more 3 yrs later!?!?

If u ask me, i say go for theHP ones. they look much better than the DELL ones, are not as costly as DELL or Lenovo and performance wise, they are at par with DELL (this fact i obtained from a friend of mine who's jus joined XL and is in a good position to analyse dif laptops).

Perf wise, Lenovo stands out for sure. But i dont have so much money sorry :)

BTW - is there any other option apart from these 3?!?!

WEll, pretty much no. I saw the white Compaq ( aka HP branded as Comaq ) they looked exciting as well. But i'd any day suggest going for a good Lenevo. If cost is a factor go for HP. I havent used a dell but i feel its too heavy.

Iday : There are too many options. my Dad had a samsung.. It was really light ( far far lighter than my IBM). The other option is Fijitsu or may be even Sony ( Viao). No comments on the performance of these brands. I just know they are super cool and light.

i've seen samsung and i think they are over priced. Same with Sony - as with all their products. they're just too damn costly. in my view, u end up paying more for the brand :)

no idea reg fujitsu or for that matter, toshiba.
